So, I had this super-cool idea for a treasure. Which quickly led to a super-cool adventure to undertake...using the treasure.
Do you see any pitfalls around using a treasure to 'unlock' a later adventure? I'm not sure and my "railroad-dar" is getting twitchy.

On the contrary, I'm all for it. Like, you give them a treasure that lets the PCs travel into the spirit world, and later on you create a monster who hangs out in the spirit world, and to defeat it they're going to have to go in there to take it on? Cool by me.
