Mr foot, welcome to mouthville (an interview)
«
on:
January 09, 2008, 10:50:41 AM »
A couple weeks ago Rob Bohl interviewed me about In a Wicked Age, and now he's put the interview up online:
The Independent Insurgency Episode 002
.
I'm happy to answer questions and/or justify myself and/or apologize like mad, here in this thread or at
anyway
.
Thanks, Rob!

I really liked the casual nature of the interview.
I also really like the story of getting punched in the gut by crappy games and thus decided to publish on $60 instead of spending it on the latest version of Ars Magica. I like that you function on a no debt business model. That can definitely work when it comes to slowly compounding annual sales with new product releases rather than gambling on the 3 tier system with borrowed money.
I've also decided to read some Jack Vance as a result of the interview.

Ah, that was fun. It's like having Vincent and Rob hanging out in the room with me.
The golf-bag analogy was mine. :-)

I'm glad you guys liked it. I too am tempted to read some Tanith Lee and Jack Vance now.
John, did I get a good URL for you? The agon-rpg.com url wasn't resolving for me.

Nobody's called on me to apologize, so I guess nothing.
Which is kind of a relief. Also kind of disappointing, since I meant to say at least ONE controversial thing, surely. I didn't have any particular controversial thing in mind - well, maybe one thing. I said that I don't find cheaper printing for Dogs in the Vineyard because then I'd have to lower the price, and Dogs in the Vineyard has been one of the standards by which my friends decide how much to charge for their games. I expected someone to be mad at me for that.
Oh well. Luke Crane's going to interview me at Dreamation, I'll see if I can say something controversial then.

Yeah, Vincent, you and me are alike. Personally, whenever I try to say something controversial and inflammatory, people either ignore me or nod and say, "Hmm yes. That's a good point." I guess we just don't have the knack of really making people mad.
Is this a flaw or a strength?

What the hell?? That's so messed up, Vincent! You should totally find a new, cheaper printer who still prints to the same or better quality. As a matter of fact, I demand it!
Wait, what? Lower the price? Why would you do that? $22 is plenty reasonable, and besides, it sets a standard for your friends to base their own prices off of.
I demand an apology, and a change in policy.

Hey, I really enjoyed the podcast and listened to it twice. I sometimes laughed all alone on the street.
Good job Rob and Vincent!

You've already been shown that the market bears your price. So cut your printing costs and take a bit more of a reward for your work.
